BATTLING TERRORISM- 6 DATA MINING SITES

Internet searching and Data Mining are key features in many homeland security initiatives. It is used to detect
fraud, assess risks, and for accumulating an information base on terrorist groups. Basically, data mining uses data analysis tools to discover previously unknown, valid patterns and relationships in large data sets.
Homeland security professionals data mine to identify terrorist activities, such as money transfers and communications, and to identify and track individual terrorists operating alone through travel and immigration records. Here are some useful Internet sites to add to your Data Mining and OSINT research resource list:

Trajectory is the official magazine of the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF). Based out of Herndon, VA

National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA). They also maintain a Twitter account. This is the official Twitter account for the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.

The Intelligence Community.com: This network of information is for intelligence and national security professionals.

AFCEA is the world’s largest association dedicated to intelligence professionals. They offer resources for professional development, thought leadership, and networking. They serve government, military, and private sector intelligence professionals worldwide.

10 OSINT RESOURCES ON NUCLEAR PROLIFERATION

Fortunately, half of all nuclear weapons projects begun since 1970 have failed and the successful ones have generally needed far more time than expected. Still, the world is witnessing a global proliferation of nuclear hardware and knowledge and it is only a matter of time until countries have not only nuclear weapons, but the means to rocket them to the US in less than a half hour. Since the Cold War days,  arms control & non-proliferation of nuclear technology have once again become critical issues. Nuclear weapons are growing smaller each day and the threat of nuclear briefcase bombs may very well become a real threat in the near future.
The knowledge to use these awful weapons is spreading around the globe at the speed of light, thanks to the  Internet information highway.
I hope you find the following 10 sources helpful in your efforts to keep up in the field of nuclear proliferation and in the efforts we are using to halt or at least slow down the spread of nuclear weapons, materials and knowledge:

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists informs the public about risks from nuclear weapons, nuclear energy, climate change and biotech.

The Nuclear Threat Initiative is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization working to reduce global threats from nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. Based in Washington, DC
The James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies combats the spread of weapons of mass destruction by analysis & training the next generation of specialists. Based in Monterey, CA.

The Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS) is a non-profit, non-partisan institution that  will keep you up-to-date about science and policy issues affecting international security. Its primary focus is on stopping the spread of nuclear weapons and related technology to other nations and terrorists. In-depth reports and excellent analysis, I might add. They follow Iran's nuclear program and continually update it at their Nuclear Iran site. Based out of Washington, DC.
The Carnegie Nuclear Policy Program is an internationally acclaimed source of expertise on the nuclear industry, nonproliferation, security, and disarmament. Based in Washington, DC.
Ploughshares Fund is a global security foundation with Joe Cirincione as its President and author of Nuclear Nightmares. It is publicly supported and organizes and innovates projects to realize a world free from the threat of nuclear weapons. Very informative and research-based articles on the site about nuclear proliferation issues. Based out of Washington, DC
The Arms Control Association (ACA) works to eliminate the threats posed by the world's most dangerous weapons. Based in Washington, DC

The American Security Project (ASP) is a nonpartisan group committed to nuclear security, from non-proliferation to reducing the global nuclear stockpile. Based in Washington, DC.

Rose Gottemoeller- Acting Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security. This is a government site but has well-researched articles that are often updated on nuclear proliferation around the globe. Based on of Washington, DC.

Robert Morton, Ed., Ed.S. is a member of the Association Of Former Intelligence Officers (AFIO) and writes the online Spy thriller "Corey Pearson- CIA Spymaster in the Caribbean and Florida Keys." CIA LIBRARY IS SOURCE FOR VITAL OSINT INFO

The CIA Library contains a wealth of intelligence information. The CIA releases millions of pages of documents each year and mounds of these declassified documents as well as current publications are easy to obtain at this site. The CIA Library used to be open only to their
personnel and contained over 125,000 books and archives of over 1,700 periodicals. However, the new digital library has opened up to the public online, without risking national security (I hope).
Although I viewed the CIA Museum at CIA HQ in Langley, VA a few years back when I attended an AFIO seminar on the OSS, I couldn't gain access to the library (photo above). This  main library has a large reference collection that includes the usual research tools: encyclopedias, dictionaries,  commercial directories, atlases, diplomatic lists, foreign and domestic phone books, CD-ROMS, web-based resources, journals, foreign and domestic newspapers, monographs and extensive commercial database services.
The good news is that not all this information (for obvious reasons), but much of it is accessible via the Digital Library. A best-kept secret is that the CIA main library participates in inter-library loans of circulating items with many colleges and universities around the U.S.
The CIA Library's Historical Intelligence Collection is primarily open-source and dedicated to the collection, retention, and exploitation of material dealing with the intelligence profession. Currently there are over 25,000 books and an extensive collection of press clippings on that subject.

You can obtain additional information through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and Privacy Act of 1974. There are recommended procedures you must follow when requesting vital and unclassified information and chances are you may have to appeal after an initial request is denied. But, such documents are, indeed, obtainable. Just use common sense when requesting unclassified and vital
government information. If our enemies could benefit from what you are innocently requesting, for the good of the order...don't ask!

RADICAL ISLAM BRUTAL TOWARDS FORGIVING CHRISTIANS

What do you believe about Muslims living in N.America and Europe? (Multiple answers required and comments appreciated).

pollcode.com free polls

I came across an article written by Emad El Din Adeeb in the Asharq Alawsat, a leading Arabic daily newspaper. I read his writings often in my OSINT News research and consider him to be a reliable source to interpret the inner workings of the Arab world and their perception of the US. Recently, he discussed the assassination of the US ambassador and three other US embassy staff in Benghazi, and defined it as a terrible crime and a political disaster by any standard, not just in terms of US – Libyan relations, but Washington’s relations throughout the entire region.
Emad El Din Adeeb posed an excellent question to his Arabic readers. He wondered how the White House, State Department and Pentagon are interpreting this tragic event. Are they questioning whether or not this is the proper thanks the U.S. deserves after it helped Libya and its people
politically,  financially, militarily and security-wise? He brought up the point that, until now, his country did not know the true identity of who carried out this heinous crime, but he added that fingers are being pointed at forces comprised of remnants of the Gaddafi regime.

Read the online spy thriller series "Corey Pearson- CIA Spymaster in the Caribbean" and get to know Corey and how the CIA operates. First 3 episodes are free!

He also reports that there is unconfirmed theory that a section of the al Qaeda organization, which last year transferred from Afghanistan and Pakistan to Yemen, is now bedded down in three other territories- Syria, the Sinai Peninsula and yes, Libya. By the way, the Syrian Free Army is becoming more populated with al Qaeda fighters, to the concern of all.

It is not uncommon to see the black al Qaeda banner being raised in Yemen or Cairo’s Tahrir Square. It is no coincidence that the assassination of the US ambassador in Benghazi and the huge protests outside the American embassy in Cairo took place on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. It is also no surprise that the al Qaeda flag was raised outside the walls of the US embassy last week.

Emad El Din Adeeb also stated that “It is no longer surprising to see, on our television screens, trucks equipped with machine guns manned by masked figures brandishing the black al Qaeda banner”.

I believe al Qaeda is not on the road to defeat, but is strengthening more now than ever before. It still maintains a central organization with a unified command in charge of violence and terrorist operations throughout the world. There has been a huge shift following the killing of its infamous leader Osama Bin Laden. Today, under Ayman al-Zawahiri, al Qaeda  follows different approaches based on establishing branches wherever crises are taking place, thus securing a wide-spread international presence. According to Emad El Din Adeeb, this new al Qaeda policy of establishing branches and units across the region will make it difficult for armies, regimes and conventional intelligence services to counter them.
He further wrote in the Asharq Alawsat, “This situation will create a state of turmoil and chaos that cannot be controlled, not just during the era of the Arab Spring, but following it as well. The current assassination attempts against Yemeni officials following regime change, the Benghazi operation following the collapse of the Qaddafi regime and the protests outside of the US embassy after Mursi came to power- all represent evidence that al Qaeda lives on as a new chapter in the post-Arab Spring era”.
I agree with US policy makers inside the Obama administration and within the Intelligence Community (IC) who believe the attack on the US Libyan embassy and the recent killings were purposeful, coordinated and pre-planned... by the new al Qaeda that Emad El Din Adeeb
describes. I also believe that the ultra-right religious factions in the US may result in many more American deaths throughout the Middle East. The ridiculous video produced by a right-wing evangelical christian spawned the Middle East protests against the U.S. And, it isn't the first time such chaos was instigated. Most Christians do not hate un-radicalized Muslims, however, some of America's right-wing, evangelical "Christians" are, indeed, bigoted and prejudiced toward Muslims.
It's unfortunate that the masses of Muslims and Christians cannot chastise the small percentage of their peers who decide to become murderous terrorists and bigots. Perhaps our Intelligence Community (IC) and State Department can join hands and, in some way, afford them avenues to do so?
Allow me to discuss a bigoted, right-wing Christian who mended his ways. In the 1980s, a man named Siljander was a conservative republican from Michigan who entered Congress roughly the same time Newt Gingrich and Tom Delay did. He was prepared to mold the world into his own fundamentalist, right-wing religious mindset. A staunch member of the Religious Right, he even walked out of the National Prayer Breakfast when a speaker quoted from the Qur'an.
After he lost his reelection, he scrutinized the Bible, searching for passages that verified it was his mission to convert others to Christianity in order to save them from eternal damnation. He came up with zilch and couldn't even find a passage saying that Jesus set out to form a new religion. This discovery was the first step on a spiritual and political journey that started with an in-depth linguistic study of the Bible and led to the discovery that Christianity and Islam share many base words and concepts.
Ironically, Siljander became United Nations ambassador and began sharing his insights on the common grounds shared by both Islam and Christianity. He traveled to unfriendly places around the globe- Libya, Sudan, Pakistan, and India- and tried to forge relationships with both heads of state and religious leaders. Is it possible that this man's quest could be a way to radically shift the present religious landscape and help heal the rift between Islam and the West? Could there be Global Summits between Muslim and Christian leaders to ascertain where they agree and disagree? After all, Mullahs and pastors have much the same in their breeches as the rest of us!
In the book Because They Hate, Brigitte Gabriel describes how she lost her childhood to militant Islam. After reading about her plight, I abandoned the idea of Global Summits to reconcile differences between Christians and Muslims and to defuse the radicalization of Muslims. Militant Islam will never sit down and reconcile ideological differences with western religious leaders, diplomats, Christians, NGOs...or any other person or organization.
Gabriel describes the true nature of radical Islam and warns that the US is threatened by fundamentalist Islamic theology in the same way Lebanon was and still is. Radical Islam will stop at nothing short of domination over all non-Muslim countries. Gabriel saw this mission start in Lebanon and sees in the West a blatant ignorance of the ways and thinking of the Middle East. America and the West have  consistently underestimated the single-mindedness with which all of fundamentalist Islam, specifically radical Muslims and al Qaeda, have  pursued their common goals over the past thirty years.
I was hopeful that a Global Summit would lead to the understanding that everyone ought to worship God according to their own inclinations, and not be constrained by force. It is a mere pipe dream...I wish I had a magic wand. I'd wave it to end the stark reality that Christians suffer a far greater hostility from radical Muslims throughout the Middle East than Muslims do from Christians throughout America and Europe. As I witness Saudi Arabian funds pour into America to build mosques to spread their word, I realize that  Christianity and America show far more humanism and acceptance than the Middle Eastern countries and Islam.
In fact, Christians face torture and death throughout the Middle East from militant Islam. Evil things happen to converts to Christianity from Islam- they face being killed in Saudi Arabia, Mauritania and Iran and risk severe legal penalties in other countries across the Middle East.
The Jewish physicist, Steven Weinberg once said, "With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion. I disagree with Weinberg. The religion doing evil things today is radical Islam, not Christianity. I think Brigitte Gabriels has it right. For now, I'll put away my magic wand and deep six the idea of a Global Summit...for now.

BUILD YOU PERSONAL OSINT SPY COMMUNITY!

The following 23 sites are examples of the national security community I've developed using social media. They  are good sources, operated by people who research domestic and foreign national security, terrorism, and defense issues. Yes...I have others unwittingly do my spying for me!
There are plenty of Intelligence Community (IC)professionals who maintain personal social media sites, and so do hundreds of newspaper journalist who write daily and weekly columns on intelligence matters. I follow them all on Twitter and also look at who their following and who follows them. Believe me, it's easy to build a large, reliable and authentic intelligence-gathering community using social media.
As an intelligence professional, spy thriller author, journalist or spy buff, you can build such a community by using Twitter. And, you can expand it with links to Facebook, Google+, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram, Slideshare, Foursquare and Blogging.
It's kind of like having others gather the national security  information you need, for you. Even additional information can be obtained by engaging your members and finding out what's inside their heads through the use of forums, polls, and petitions...at no cost. Yes, there is a plethora of free embeds on the Internet. I created this blog you're viewing now and post such imbeds on posts all the time. I steer my social media community members to them, especially the polls, to get their opinions on intelligence matters. The free polls I use also provide a "comments" section.
When I begin research for an article on a national security topic, I routinely begin by performing OSINT research into over 2,000 Twitter sources. Here's 23 of them. Feel free to use them... I'll bill you later (just kidding). Enjoy!

Missile Monitor: A neat blog with recent news,
developments and analyses in the field of proliferation and technology of missiles as well as the latest news on missile defense systems.

The Counter Jihad Report site attempts to stop Islamization and encroachment of Sharia Law through peaceful means, including education and information sharing.

The English Defense League promotes a grassroots effort to take back the streets against the spread of Islamism.

Defiant Lion UK makes a defiant roar against the evils of radical Islam, Marxism, etc. It is an interesting Twitter account with in-depth comments and embellishes the UK's patriotic conservative philosophy.

The Gen Muniruzzaman and the Bangladesh Institute of Peace & Security (BIPSS) site is another I enjoy reading from time to time. He is a soldier, peacekeeper, security analyst, and head of a think tank covering security studies. He also is editor of “Peace and Security Review”. Located in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
